Cordray Out for Two to Six Weeks
Earlier today, University of Hawai'i women's volleyball player
Kelli Cordray was diagnosed with pneumomediastinum. Women's athletic
trainer Melody Toth described the illness as, "a small hole
in one of the lungs which allows air to leak into the chest cavity."
Cordray complained of chest problems this morning and was sent
to team physician Dr. Andrew Nichols for examination. A chest
X-ray and EKG (electrocardiogram) revealed the problem. According
to Toth, overexertion caused this illness.
Cordray will miss anywhere from two to six weeks and is required
to get extensive rest.
"The team will survive, because we've got a lot of depth
at that position," Head Coach Dave Shoji said. "I feel
so bad for Kelli, she's a great person for the program. This
will set her back, she's worked so hard at trying to earn a (starting)
spot."
The 5-10 junior is expected to compete at the left-side hitter
position this season. Cordray, who is from Manhattan Beach, Calif.,
was primarily used in the back row her first two seasons.
