2000 Game-by-Game Recap: UH vs. Pacific (April 15, 2000)
Lockwood's Final Home Match a Success
HONOLULU - On senior night, seventh-ranked Hawai'i made libero Russell
Lockwood's final home match a successful one, defeating Pacific, 15-8,
15-9, 15-5 Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center. A crowd of 5,697 bid the
Rainbow's lone senior goodbye with a standing ovation as he made his final
jaunt around the arena.
Hawai'i concludes its regular season 19-9, 13-6 in the Mountain
Pacific Sports Federation and heads to USC next weekend for a first round
MPSF Tournament match in Los Angeles, Calif. The Tigers ended their season
10-17, 6-13 MPSF.
Although playing a position which doesn't attract much notoriety,
the crowd showed their appreciation for the senior who proved to many as
one of the best liberos in the country. With 260 digs in 2000, Lockwood
needs just seven more to break the all-time single-season mark set by
Naveh Milo two years ago.
The Rainbows started the match much like Friday's three-game
rout. UH scored the first nine points of the match in jumping out to a
13-1 lead. A mild Tiger rally closed the lead to 14-8 before the 'Bows
ended it on a Costas Theocharidis kill.
In the second game, the Tigers held an early 5-3 lead. But the
Rainbows recovered, putting together a 6-0 run, en route to a 15-9
victory. The third game was a rout, as the Rainbows built leads of 5-1 and
9-3.
Theocharidis ended the match with a team-high 15 kills and 10
digs. Clay Stanley's five aces tied a single-season mark of 54 held by
Mark Presho in 1993. Stanley also pounded 13 kills and had six digs.
The Rainbows leave on Thursday for Los Angeles. Earlier this
season, the Trojans swept a two-match series, winning the first match in
five.
