Rainbows Serve it to Tigers
HONOLULU - A barrage of 14 service aces lifted seventh-ranked Hawai'i past
Pacific, 15-1, 15-2, 15-8, Friday night in a Mountain Pacific Sports
Federation match at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbows cruised to
victory in just 82 minutes as seven players had at least one ace on the
night. Costas Theocharidis led all Rainbows with four aces followed by
Brenton Davis with three.
The victory improved Hawai'i's record to 18-9, 12-6 MPSF, while
the Tigers dropped to 10-16, 6-12 MPSF.
Clay Stanley pounded a match-high 17 kills and notched two
aces. Along with his four aces, Theocharidis added 16 kills and three
blocks. Even reserve middle blocker Geronimo Chala got into the action as
he launched two aces late in the third game.
The Rainbows routed the Tigers in games one and two. After UOP
scored the first point of the match, Hawai'i went on a 15-0 run, fueled by
seven aces. The rout continued in the second game as the 'Bows ran off six
straight, en route to an 8-1 advantage.
The two teams conclude the regular season with a rematch on
Saturday, Mar. 15. The Rainbows will honor senior libero Russell Lockwood
in the traditional senior night ceremonies. Hawai'i will also find out
before the match who they will face in the MPSF Tournament first round
beginning next week.
