Diving Head Coach Michael Brown


Head Diving Coach Mike Brown begins his second season with the University of Hawai'i swimming and diving team. He will be assisted this year with volunteer coach, Anita Rossing. Brown's extensive background as a coach and diver has brought extensive experience to Hawai'i's diving program and will continue to do so this season.

Brown's accomplishments include three NCAA Diving Coach of the Year awards at Texas, 31 Southwest Conference Team Championships, 14 NCAA Team Championships, and last year's PCSC Co-Coach of the Year. Last year, Brown and Rossing coached four Rainbows to the NCAA Zone E Qualifying meet and one to the NCAA Championships.

Before his impressive coaching career, Brown excelled as a competitive diver. From 1967-70, he competed for Dartmouth in 1 and 3 meter competition, earning NCAA All-American honors. He was also crowned Eastern Interscholastic Swimming League (EISL) Champion and in 1971, after receiving a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, Brown won the U.S. National Diving Champion in the 1-meter event. Throughout his competitive career, which ended in 1976, Brown was an 18-time U.S. Nationals finalist, a U.S. National Team member and an International Medal winner.

During his 18 years at Texas, Brown coached 28 All-Americans, 18 U.S. National Team members and five Olympians. These divers captured a total of seven NCAA individual championships, 26 conference titles, Academic All-American honors, NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, five U.S. National titles and numerous medals in the World Championships, World University Games, Pan American Games, la Federation Internationale de Natation Amateur (FINA) World Cup, U.S. Olympic Festival, Goodwill Games and U.S. International meets.

While in Texas, Brown directed the senior programs for the Longhorn Diving Club and Texas Diving Club. He also coached the highly successful Longhorn Diving Camp. He even served as Meet Director for the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials, U.S. Diving Nationals, American Cup, All-American Diving International and Austin Cup. In addition, he was Competition Director for diving at the 1994 Commonwealth Games.

Brown was a U.S. Olympic Coach for the diving team, which participated in the1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. As a U.S. National Team Coach, he coached teams to the 1980 Olympic Team Tour, the World Championships in 1982 and 1986, the World University Games in 1979, 1981, 1983 and 1985, the FINA World Cup in 1983, 1987, 1989 and 1991, the 1990 Goodwill Games, and the 1991 Pan American Games.

In 1988 he was in the Olympic spotlight as coach for a variety of foreign International Team divers from Sweden, China, Austria, and Finland.

In 1994-95, Brown and Rossing held the co-head coaching positions at the Pacific Coast Diving Club and the Victoria Diving Camp.

As well as his extensive coaching duties, Brown was a member of the U.S. Diving's Board of Directors and served on a variety of committees, including Education, Finance, Safety, Rules, Judges, Certification, Olympic International and Technical Advisory. He was also a member of the NCAA Diving Rules Subcommittee.

Brown graduated in 1970 from Dartmouth with a degree in mathematics and earned his master of science degree in secondary education from Indiana in 1973. He enjoys reading, swimming with dolphins and skiing. He and Rossing live in Honolulu with their daughter, Rika.
