Waipio
Peninsula Soccer Stadium
The University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine soccer team will begin
its third season in the friendly confines of the Waipio Peninsula
Soccer Stadium.
After shuttling between Kapiolani Park and Ala Wai Field
both public fields and the UH practice field for their regular
season matches, the Rainbow Wahine were finally afforded the
luxury of playing in a quality facility.
The Rainbow Wahine soccer program kicked off the year 2000
in style at the New Home of Rainbow Wahine Soccer. The City
& County of Honolulu project opened with a seating capacity
of 2,500 and it has since expanded to approximately 4,500.
Since its opening, the stadium has played host to numerous
events, from the Hawaii High School Athletic Association girls
state soccer championships to international soccer matches
featuring teams from as far as Korea and Germany. This past
summer the stadium and the surrounding 19 fields at the Waipio
Complex hosted the 2002 American Youth Soccer Association
National Games with approximately to 200 teams participating.
The stadium features two main locker rooms, two training
rooms, concession booths, and administration offices. There
is also ample free parking with more than 1,000 stalls available
adjacent to the stadium.
Last season, Hawaii fans came out in record numbers (see
sidebar) to witness the UHs second season in the stadium.
Its exciting to play in one of the best collegiate facilities
in the nation, Hawaii head coach Pinsoom Tenzing said. We
were able to get our fans out and they should come out in
even more numbers this season.
The stadium is an extremely big recruiting tool, along with
our state-of-the-art practice field.
George Toma, the National Football League field guru who
was hired to re-surface the Warrior football practice field,
also renovated the Rainbow Wahine soccer campus practice field.
